What Is Method Dressing?

On the red carpet, movie stars like Zendaya and Margot Robbie have popularized method dressing as a way to continue embodying their character or the spirit of the movie they’re promoting.⁠ The term comes from the concept of “method acting,” in which actors fully embody their character even when they’re not filming or even on set.

This explains why Margot Robbie spent the entire press junket for Barbie in pink.

And it’s what Zendaya and her inventive stylist Law Roach have arguably perfected at this point, as evidenced by her red carpet looks for her various blockbuster roles over the years, like Spiderman, Challengers, and The Odyssey.

How to Method Dress with Tarot

If you can practice method dressing with a fictional character from a film, you better believe you can do it with tarot cards as well!

Every now and then, when I have no idea what to wear, I pull a tarot card to help me channel a look intuitively. It helps me get creative and tune in not only to my own intuition but also to the symbols and vibes encapsulated by the tarot card I drew for the day.

But pulling a tarot card at random to give you sartorial inspiration is not exactly what we’re talking about with method dressing.

Method dressing is deliberate. When we method dress, we are intentionally choosing to embody the energy of a specific tarot card so it can serve us in some positive way. And the ways to do this are endless! You can full-on cosplay or just adopt a couple subtle nods to your chosen tarot archetype that only you (and your tarot besties, of course) will recognize.

For example, if I’m leading a workshop or teaching a course, I might method dress as the Hierophant or the High Priestess. If I’m going to a party or on a first date, I might choose to method dress as the Queen of Wands. You pick a tarot archetype that reflects the type of energy you want to exude. It’s magic!

Method Dressing for Leo Season

⁠Since we are officially in Leo season (tarotscopes coming soon, by the way!), let’s talk about the Strength card. The Strength card is the corresponding Major Arcana card for the zodiac sign of Leo, and if you want to embody the beautiful astrological vibes in the air this month, method dressing for Strength might be the way to go.

This Major Arcana card depicts a quiet, inner power. It reminds us that genuine strength has a grace and softness to it.
